Day 6: Glacier

After a leisurely breakfast this morning at the hotel (free!) we headed out toward Glacier National Park.

With all the driving Paul has done we were wanting an easier day, but couldn’t stay still!

And of course we had to take this picture!

I thought the amount of visitors would slow down in the fall but look at the line to get in.

Our first stop was the Apgar area. This is on the western side of the park, just past West Glacier. It is at the end of McDonald Lake. Here are a few pictures from the area.

You know how you look back at old vacation pictures and think, “Remember that old car?” Or “What was I wearing?” Well here’s that picture for posterity.

Look at the old touring cars they have! So cool to see them in action.

A few more from the Apgar area.

Picnic in the car!

We then went down the road to check out Lake McDonald Lodge. There is just something special about these old lodges!

Since today is a short day we headed out of the park to visit Whitefish but this caught our attention…

20130919-191801.jpg
I’ve read about yurts and thought that maybe this was a good chance to check one out!

These were not exactly the kind of yurts I had heard of but they were interesting. Kind of like a round platform tent. (Yes, as a mother of Girl Scouts I have slept in a platform tent. I can do anything for my girls!)

Now on to Whitefish.

Whitefish is a beautiful town with breathtaking mountains in the distance. It is quite “upscale”. We had frozen yogurt at the Red Caboose and it was precious.

Standard chocolate and vanilla combo with the local “huckleberry” flavor on top!

Remember what I told you yesterday about the number of bars and casinos? Well how’s this for entertainment? Just had to snap a pic.

Dinner tonight at Hop’s. It was delicious. So fun to try the local haunts!

We are having a wonderful trip and are looking forward to a big day tomorrow!

Day 5: Glacier National Park

Woke up to find out this is ahead of us today…

20130918-094328.jpg
Winter!
Remember how I couldn’t wait to get away from the heat and love bugs? Well “note to self”… be careful what you wish for.

On the way to the park we went through Cut Bank, MT, the coldest spot in the nation. (Or so they claim). He talks too! Don’t you just wonder who’s idea it was to build the penguin?

20130918-193005.jpg

A few more miles down the road and we finally reach our main destination!

20130918-193129.jpg
Of course we had to stop at the visitor’s center…

20130918-193230.jpg
And watch the orientation movie…

20130918-193315.jpg
One of us is excited about the movie and the other is not. Can you guess which is which?

Most of the day looked like this:

Until we got to Logan Pass!

Here are a few pics of the snow:

We left Logan Pass and made our way west in the park passing beautiful Lake McDonald.

20130918-194225.jpg

And finally we arrive in Kalispell, MT, our base camp for the next few days. The weather is supposed to clear up and be sunny so we are hoping to get to really enjoy Glacier.

This little cutie was at the restaurant where we had dinner. So cute!

20130918-194538.jpg

Let me close by saying I have never seen so many “casinos” and places that sell alcohol in all my life. And I’m from Louisiana! I think they call a casino any place that has a single video poker machine but really, it’s ridiculous. Restaurant and casino, bar and casino, laundromat and casino, gas station and casino, you get the picture. Too much!

And by the way, our low was 35 degrees today with no love bugs!! 🙂

Until tomorrow friends…
